“Shout-Out to A Great and Growing Church – Bayside Galt: Where People are Discovering Authentic Community!”

Bayside Galt Church

This last Sunday morning I had the opportunity to speak at the Bayside of Galt Church and what I experienced was incredibly refreshing! My wife and I were warmly greeted at the doors and were welcomed by a variety of people. Every person that we met that was involved in setting up signs to making sure that the coffee and donuts were ready for guests were cheerful and extremely helpful. It was easy for me to observe that many of the priorities that makes Bayside Church in Granite Bay such a fantastic church in the way they make connecting with people a priority is huge here at this church.

Affiliation and History of the Church:

Bayside of Galt Church has just recently become an official affiliated church in the Evangelical Covenant Church Denomination. The Evangelical Covenant Church is a rapidly growing multiethnic denomination in the United States and Canada with ministries on five continents of the world. Founded in 1885 by Swedish immigrants, the ECC values the Bible as the word of God, the gift of God’s grace and ever-deepening spiritual life that comes through a faith with Jesus Christ, the importance of extending God’s love and compassion to a hurting world, and the strength that comes from unity within diversity.[1]

The local history of this church is in early 2008, five families in Galt got together with the concept of starting a casual, contemporary, Bible-believing church with high energy, contemporary worship music. The group met in homes for several months before connecting with Bayside Church based in Granite Bay. Bayside in Galt launched as a church plant in Easter 2010.

They function as the other Bayside regional campuses in the spirit of partnership, delivering the same relevant messages and contemporary style of worship as Bayside Church of Granite Bay, yet as a church they remain unique in that they believe their mission assignment is specifically to reach the Galt community and surrounding areas. Unlike Campus Bayside Churches that find their structure married together functioning as “One Church but many Locations” the Galt Church has its own Board of Elders that helps administrate the ministries of the Church.

Culture and Atmosphere:

The worship is dynamic with the Band being absolutely incredible. Both my wife and I felt a wonderful presence of the Holy Spirit and the worship leader really did lead us into worship with a beautiful mixture of sensitivity along with energy. Children’s Ministry is staffed very well and the teachers were very much engaged in connecting with the children. My grandson who is almost age five had to stay for both services and he had the time of his life as well as he remembered the teaching. The facility is clean and you can tell that it is a work in progress but they are doing a great job in attempting to present an environment that is done with excellence. The people understand that they exist to reach their community and I spoke with several people who were passionate about doing creative outreach that would serve their city and their region. Jason Schmidt is one of the Associate Pastors and his energy and passion kept us engaged through the announcements and his praying for the receiving of the offering. Everyone meets, Tim Wallmark, who is the Pastor of Discipleship he is warm and friendly but he also has a servant’s heart as I watched him connect with a variety of people.

The Pastor and the Ministry Team – Really Do Ministry As A Team:

One does not have to look to very hard in order to discover that this church does ministry as a team and they believe in what they are doing together. This allows me to speak about their Lead Pastor, Philip Escamilla. I have known Pastor Phillip for three years as we served together as part of the Bayside Pastoral Team as well as Pastor Phillip was the Director of Human Resources up until January, 2015. Pastor Phillip is one of the most intelligent, strategic, caring men I have come to know on my journey in Pastoral Leadership. He is a wonderful communicator that uses a great blend of making the complex simple and humor. You will always leave knowing that there is something that you can apply to your life. He is Bi-Vocational because he also serves as the Chair Division of Humanities & Social Sciences, Chair, and Public Policy Department, at William Jessup University located in Rocklin, California. His education includes the following:

  • Boston College Law School, J.D. (1999)
  • Harvard University, Ed.M. (1995)
  • University of California at Berkeley, B.A. (1993)
  • North Park University (coursework: theology and church history, 2010)[2]

What I appreciate so much about Pastor Phillips leadership is how he is developing many leaders around him that in the future some of them will be a Pastor of a Church. He has created a “Coaching Culture” in this Church.

Some of the other team members are:

Jason Schmidt

Associate Pastor

Jason was born and raised in Galt and graduated from Galt High School. He then went on to Simpson University and graduated with a B.A. in Youth Ministries and a minor in Biblical studies. He has served in several churches leading youth ministries and leading worship. He has a passion for missions and has lead mission trips to Africa, Thailand, Brazil, Mexico, and inner-city Oakland and Stockton. Jason is married to Jennifer and has three kids; Joshua, Allison, and Emma. Jason works for a Geotechnical Engineering firm in West Sacramento. His hobbies include; camping, playing guitar, and traveling. Here at Bayside, Jason heads up the greeter/usher teams, oversees the young married and 30’s groups, serves on the financial team, serves on the sound ministry team, and assists Pastor Phil whenever possible.

Tim Wallmark

Pastor of Discipleship

He was born and raised in Northern California in a loving Christian family as a pastor’s kid. I accepted Jesus as my personal savior at the age of 7 with my mom’s guidance and dedicated my life to Him at summer camp my sophomore year in high school. Graduated Petaluma HS 1974, and attended Simpson University for 2 years majoring in Biblical Studies. Happily married my wife Elaine during college and never looked back. As a couple we have been involved in ministry in some way for 38 years. Initially in Children’s Ministry, then Junior High, High School and adult ministries for 3 previous churches. Most recently acted as Associate Pastor and Interim Pastor for Calvary Bible Church in Lodi. Now servings as Pastor of Discipleship here at Bayside and loving every minute of it, seeing what God is doing here is truly amazing. I can’t wait to see what He is going to do next in us and through us! I love to do anything outdoors, running, bicycling, hiking, fishing, camping, golf, love the 49ers and Giants! Our favorite thing to do as a couple is go snorkeling in Hawaii—just don’t get to do it very often!
